Service as Action and CAS

During the lockdown period our students found different ways to look after their wellbeing, to engage in creative experiences and to make a difference to others and the environment. Here are few examples…

marfaMYP Service as Action – Making a difference to the environment

During “Earth day I thought it would be the perfect day to accomplish my service as action, I am currently staying in my other house and since I arrived I have noticed how much garbage was lying around since on the hill where I am and nobody really cares about maintaining a sustainable environment. In a safe way, since nobody else is around I wanted to do my part and collect as much trash as I could around my house. Nobody lives here or works right now so I was totally safe”.

Making a difference to the community (Service Strand)

One of our DP 2 students, Matilde, made a huge difference to the lives of others showing very strong IB values. “My purpose for this experience was to do something for my community….The main goal was to help old people and do as many grocery shopping as possible in order to help the community in this critical moment”. Engaging in creative experiences – Learning to cook

Many students in DP decided to learn and improve their cooking skills. They found this activity enjoyable and gave them the chance to build a stronger relationship with those at home. Here is a delicious Sri Lankan recipe by Shefani DP 2 student.

SRI LANKAN COOKIES (GNANAKATHA)

Ingredients:coockies

  • 250 grams of flour
  • 50 grams of butter
  • 100 grams of sugar
  • 3 teaspoons of baking powder
  • 1 egg
  • ½ teaspoon of lime juice
  • ½ teaspoon of vanilla extract

 Method:

  1. Combine flour and baking powder in a separate bowl, mix well.
  2. Add the flour mix to the sugar mix, add lime and vanilla, mix until it becomes a dough.
  3. Then add the butter to the mixture and add some water as you prefered until it becomes a dough.
  4. Make small balls from the dough, and flatten them.
  5. Coat one side with water and dip in a bowl of sugar.
  6. Preheat the oven to 180°C.
  7. Bake for 20 – 25 minutes (changes with the type of oven you have) or until its getting light golden brown.

CAS – Activity Strand

PYP and MYP students showed commitment by engaging in their usual PE/PHE and dance lessons while diploma students had to use their creativity to stay motivated to stay fit and healthy while at home.

Many DP students showed commitment towards their wellbeing. They carried out various workouts from home to look after their health. Here are some pictures of our DP students Flavia and Sofia working out at home.

I feel that these are very inspiring stories that help us remember that we too can make a difference. Well done ISC for taking action! We are very proud of your achievements!
