MYP Curriculum Corner: 18/01/2019

Dear Parents,

Welcome to our new MYP Curriculum Corner for the new term. In this issue, we will discuss our Italian and International strands.

The Italian and International Strands in grades 7, 8 and 9 explained overview

At ISC we offer two possible strands to follow in the first three years of middle school. The first strand is called the International strand and the second strand is called the Italian Strand.

In the international strand students will follow the International Baccalaureate program me with all lessons taught in English apart from separate language lessons. In the Italian strand students will have a bilingual approach to the program, having half of certain subjects taught in the Italian language and half taught in the English language. Please see the table below for a further understanding of which lessons, and how many, are in Italian.

Why do we offer the Italian strand?

In recognition of our host country, having local students, we believe that these students have the right to access their national exams as well as being able to follow the International Baccalaureate. In addition,  students who are not native Italian but have a good level of Italian can also take the Italian strand. Students that take the Italian strand will be able to take the national terza media exam in Grade 9. This may be useful for future jobs in Italy or if they had decided to join a local Italian high school that is not international.

Why do we have the International strand?

The international strand has all lessons taught in English and with the aim for students to follow the full international program right up until they are ready to enter university. The international strand is for international students, as well as Italian students who do not wish to take Italian national exams.

What differences are in the classroom?

There are not many differences in the classrooms of the two strands, with the exception that each individual Italian strand subject is taught by two teachers, and half of the lessons are taught in Italian.

As an example, if you refer to the table below, the first subject you will see is Maths with 6 lessons per week. The Italian strand has 3 lessons taught in Italian by an Italian Maths subject specialist, speaking only in Italian. The 3 International lessons are taught in English by a Maths subject specialist who speaks only in English.

Teachers collaborate and work together to deliver the same program as the international strand, but with the different language element. The international strand will have all 6 Maths lessons taught in English by only one teacher.

What similarities are in the classroom?

All teachers follow the philosophy of the IB to teach through an inquiry, holistic approach.

Teachers collaborate to ensure all students are learning the same content and topics to make it fair for both strands and so no students are having a different program delivered.

Why is there not an Italian strand in high school?

In MYP4-5 (grades 10 and 11), all students follow the International Baccalaureate program with the aim of leading them towards the Diploma program and onto university. All examinations are taken in English.
